Why Wearing a Swim Cap Can Make a Big Difference to Your Child’s Swimming

At Big Blue Swim School, we’re excited to announce the launch of our new Big Blue Swim School swim caps. From next week, swim caps will be available to purchase online and at our venues.

We’re often asked about the benefits of wearing a swim cap when learning to swim, and the simple answer is: there are many!

Swim caps can benefit swimmers of all ages and abilities, from those taking their first steps in the water to swimmers progressing towards swimming clubs, triathlons and other aquatic activities.

Building confidence from the very beginning

For children joining our preschool, non-swimmer and beginner 1 for the first time, entering the pool can be an exciting but sometimes anxious experience. There is already so much for them to learn and get used to, and the last thing they need is to be distracted by hair covering their face or mouth when learning to put their face in the water.

A well-fitting pair of goggles can make a huge difference to a swimmer’s confidence, and a well-fitted swim cap can support this further by helping to keep goggles securely in place.

This means swimmers can focus on developing their skills rather than worrying about their hair, goggles slipping or anything else distracting them in the water.

Supporting front crawl and breathing skills

As swimmers progress into our Beginner 2 and Improver 1 lessons, they start developing important frontcrawl skills, including side breathing.

Side breathing is a vital part of learning to swim frontcrawl correctly. However, our teachers often see swimmers struggle with this skill because long hair can fall across their face when they turn to breathe.

This can make it difficult for swimmers to achieve the correct body position and breathing technique, which can ultimately affect their progress.

Our teachers have found that side breathing is one of the more challenging skills at this stage, and having a swim cap, alongside well-fitting goggles, can help remove some of these barriers.

Helping swimmers refine their technique

For our Improver 2 and Advanced swimmers, the focus shifts towards refining technique and becoming more efficient in the water.

At this stage, small changes can make a big difference. Developing the ability to breathe correctly across all four strokes is an important part of becoming a more confident and capable swimmer.

As swimmers work towards their Stage 10 award, they are developing the technique, skills and stamina needed to potentially progress into swimming clubs.

We appreciate that joining a swim club won’t be the onward journey for every swimmer, but Stage 10 is designed to equip swimmers with those skills should they choose to take that next step.

At this level, a swim cap should be considered a standard part of a swimmer’s kit, alongside goggles.

Helping every swimmer get the most from their lessons

Our priority is to give every swimmer the best possible experience as they learn and develop in the water.

Based on feedback from our teachers, we believe encouraging swimmers of all levels to wear a swim cap can make a real difference. From helping our youngest swimmers feel more comfortable and confident, to supporting more advanced swimmers as they refine their technique, a swim cap is a simple addition to their swim kit that can have a positive impact.

Big Blue Swim School swim caps are now available to purchase online here and at our venues from next week.

We look forward to seeing our swimmers in their new caps!
