Rookie Lifeguard

RLSS UK’s Rookie Lifeguard programme is taught using fun, varied lifesaving and rescue activities to give children the skills they need to be confident in the pool or the sea and enjoy water safely, whether in shallow or deeper water.

Built into the programme are lessons in valuable survival, rescue and sports skills…all delivered in an exciting way that will get children involved and motivated. The course can run parallel to your child’s current swimming lessons and will enhance the skills they learn in the pool.

Children will work towards the following awards:

  • Rookie Bronze - stages 1-3

  • Rookie Silver - stages 1-3

  • Rookie Gold - stages 1-3

  • Life support

Children will work towards approximately 3 awards per term and most children will take on average 3-4 terms to complete the rookie lifeguard and life support programme. All children are provided with a progress book and are awards 3 certificates per term if successfully achieved.

Requirements

Rookie Lifeguard is aimed at children aged 8-12years who have completed a minimum of Swim England stage 9. They must be able to swim 800m continuously without stopping and be confident swimming 50-100m in all 4 swimming strokes.

Unfortunately, children not at this stage of swimming are unlikely to be able to manage the demands of the course.

Class Times

Monday - Queensferry High - 7.15-8.00pm - Rookie Silver

Tuesday - Royal High School - 7.15-8.00pm - Rookie Bronze

National Lifesaving Academy

The RLSS UK National Lifesaving Academy awards are a suite of progressive awards that teach personal survival, first aid, CPR, rescue, and fitness skills to anyone aged 12 years and over.

Their aim is to teach candidates how to stay safe around water and how to safely assist others who may have gotten into difficulty in both aquatic and non-aquatic situations.

The awards are structured into three levels (Bronze Lifesaving Certificate, Bronze Star, and Bronze Medallion), and multiple environmental strands are available at the Bronze Star and Bronze Medallion levels.

Requirements

National Lifesaving Academy is for children aged 12 and over who have completed the above rookie lifesaving award (bronze—> life support).
